  • Where can I get the app?
The app is now availalbe on the Apple App Store - just search for BeatBalance or if you're on your mobile device right now, go to https://apps.apple.com/us/app/beatbalance/id1484347411
  • How much will it cost?
There will be three options for you to choose from: You can use a free, ad-supported version. You'll occasionally see targeted adverts, and some features - Speed Builder and Free Mode - are not supported. If you're ready to commit - and we know that the longer you use BeatBalance, the greater the benefits - you can buy a years subscription for £29.90. A monthly subscription costs £2.99 per month. Please note that prices outside of the UK are set by Apple, based on our GBP price.
  • Why do I have to use wired headphones?
In order to measure your timing accurately, the amount of time it takes for sound to emerge from the headphones needs to be consistent so that it can be compensated for. With wired headphones this delay is small and consistent. The delay with Bluetooth headphones is both much longer and also inconsistent- this means that it’s impossible to know exactly when sound is emerging from the headphones, and consequently it’s therefore also impossible to determine whether or not you’re playing in time with it.
  • How accurate is BeatBalance?
When properly set up and calibrated, BeatBalance will measure the timing of your playing accurate to within less than 0.5 milliseconds.
  • How stable is BeatBalance’s metronome?
The metronome and all sounds are sample-accurate, with jitter of +/- 1 sample at 44.1kHz.
  • Why is there only one rhythm pattern?
We’ve tried to make the app the simplest it can be while still being useful. We hope to be able to add a pattern editor in future. In the meantime, using Free mode (available to subscribers) will allow a greater variety of rhythms. If there are any features you'd like to see added, please comment in the forum. We can't promise to do all of them, but we'd be really interested to know what you'd find useful.
  • Will non 4/4 time signatures be supported?
We plan to allow different time signatures in a future update. If there are any features you'd like to see added, please comment in the forum. We can't promise to do all of them, but we'd be really interested to know what you'd find useful.
  • Will triplets/quintuplets and other beat subdivisions be supported?
Yes, we plan to add this in a future update. If there are any features you'd like to see added, please comment in the forum. We can't promise to do all of them, but we'd be really interested to know what you'd find useful.
  • Will swing/shuffle time be supported?
Yes. We also plan to include an editor to allow more unusual time feels (e.g. Moroccan gnawa triplets) to be practiced! If there are any features you'd like to see added, please comment in the forum. We can't promise to do all of them, but we'd be really interested to know what you'd find useful.
  • Can I export my practice data to analyse it in other programs (for example, Excel or R)?"
Yes. You can export CSV files, suitable for import into data analysis programs, for individual practice sessions, including the timing of each individual stroke played, as well as summary statistics for each session type from the corresponding menus.
  • Will other aspects of playing be addressed?
For the moment we're concentrating on developing the app as it currently stands. We have ideas to address other aspects of drum practice in a similar fashion but we first want to make what we currently have work reall well. If there are any features you'd like to see added, please comment in the forum. We can't promise to do all of them, but we'd be really interested to know what you'd find useful.
